The Call

A nationally leading durable goods company had been designing a product at the start of the COVID pandemic that would help consumers easily clean and disinfect household products – from produce to sports equipment – in a way not possible before. The product became ready for testing which led to management wanting feedback on the product design, functions, and possible communication strategies rooted in consumer feedback.

The company engaged Catapult Insights to:

  • Verify the effectiveness of the new product among consumers with a home use test (HUT)

  • Identify any potential product design tweaks that needed to be made prior to product launch

  • Uncover any resonating themes among consumers that may guide communications going forward

Our Response

Catapult Insights designed a home use test (HUT) paired with follow-up interviews with a subset of the HUT participants to dive deeper into various uncovered themes and topics. The purpose of the HUT was to get a prototype of the product into the hands of a prospective buyer, while the follow-up interviews were designed to go that extra step of having an in-depth discussion about their experiences after their time with the product.

Home Use Test (HUT)

  • Roughly 6 weeks of product usage and engagement

  • A variety of topics discussed prior to product installation

  • Check-in discussions during the usage test

  • Final/parting thoughts at the end of usage

Follow-up Interviews

  • A handful of participants from the HUT were selected based on a variety of factors to have a 2-hour long conversation about their experiences with the product and to dive deeper into uncovered themes and topics

The Celebration

Our designed program gave the durable goods company solid direction and feedback to further refine their product and to begin building out a messaging strategy. The results from the research also led to new business questions where Catapult Insights partnered with the company again for additional message testing research.

The product is now available for purchase and readily available to consumers.
