Home Use Tests (HUTs) Can Be a Game-Changer for Product Development

Sep 16, 2025Blog, Insights

Lab tests, concept tests, and brief qualitative consumer interactions with your product can only take you so far when you’re developing a new product. To truly understand how consumers experience your product, you need to see it in action—right in their homes. That’s where Home Use Tests (HUTs) shine.

At their core, HUTs allow you to observe how consumers use your new product over time, capturing authentic feedback on usability, performance, and emotional resonance. HUTs provide a window into the daily routines and environments where products are actually used. These context-rich insights are invaluable for refining features, messaging, and go-to-market strategies.

Take, for example, a recent HUT we conducted for a durable-goods client’s revolutionary (but costly to create) new product. Over a 7-week period, participants across the U.S. engaged with the product in their daily lives while documenting their experience through video, written, and photo responses. The research not only validated the product’s effectiveness but also uncovered key design preferences, highlighted top use cases, and identified a few unexpected performance and installation issues that needed to be addressed prior to launch. The results informed the improvement plan for the next iteration of the product as well as its go-to-market strategy. It also gave the company more confidence in their decision to continue moving this product forward through development and eventually to launch.

Of course, executing a successful HUT requires thoughtful planning—from managing participant engagement to remaining flexible and able to easily pivot as learnings come in. But when done right, the payoff is clear: better products, smarter launches, and more confident decision-making.

In a world where consumer expectations are high and product lifecycles are often crunched, HUTs offer the opportunity to get it right before going big.
